Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. What is Back-A-Rest™?
Back-A-Rest is a simple, effective, and durable lower-back decompression tool designed to relieve lower back ache, stiffness, tension, and discomfort. Our LADS approach (Lifting, Arching, Decompressive Stretching), reduces pressure on the spine and helps improve flexibility — in just 5 to 15 minutes of use.
2. How does Back-A-Rest™ work?
Back-A-Rest features a unique dual-contoured top surface that supports your lower back, using your own body weight to create a deep, natural decompressive stretch and a lower-back self-massage.
3. How does Back-A-Rest™ differ from lumbar cushions?
Unlike a lumbar cushion that supports your back while you sit, Back-A-Rest is designed to be used while lying comfortably on a bed or couch.
Lumbar cushions help support posture while sitting.
Back-A-Rest is not a lumbar cushion. Instead, it uses your own body weight and its unique dual-contoured shape to gently stretch, decompress and massage your lower back.
It isn't meant to support your posture—it is designed to help you relax and relieve lower-back ache, stiffness, and tension.
4. Who is Back-A-Rest™ for?
Back-A-Rest is ideal for people who:
- Experience lower back ache, stiffness, or soreness from work, posture, or aging
- Perform heavy lifting, bending, or long hours on their feet
- Sit for extended periods at desks or in vehicles
- Want a simple, drug-free solution for daily back ache relief
- Need a portable alternative to bulky inversion tables or expensive treatments
Not recommended for individuals with serious spinal conditions. (see medical disclaimer.)
5. When is the best time to use Back-A-Rest™?
While it can be used anytime, the best moments are:
- In the morning before getting out of bed -- Helps reduce stiffness and start the day right.
- After work/on the couch in the evening -- Releases built-up tension from daily activity.
- Before bed -- Helps relax the lower back and ease into a better night's sleep.
6. Can I use Back-A-Rest™ on a firm mattress?
Yes! Back-A-Rest works on both firm and soft mattresses, as well as on couches and recliners with soft backs. Mattress firmness may slightly impact the degree of deformation.
7. Can women use Back-A-Rest™?
Absolutely! While Back-A-Rest was originally designed for a larger, heavier frame, many women also find it effective. If the standard thickness feels too intense, placing a folded bath towel between the top of the device and your upper back or shoulder blades can soften the stretch.
8. Will Back-A-Rest™ wear out over time?
Back-A-Rest is made from the highest-quality polyurethane foam designed to provide many years of use with proper care.
9. Can I use Back-A-Rest™ with pain relief creams or gels?
Yes! Back-A-Rest is made from flexible polyurethane foam, which resists moisture, sweat, oils and chemicals. It is safe to use with menthol-based, camphor-based and capsaicin-based topical analgesics to enhance relief. We recommend using a small towel between you and Back-A-Rest when using these products.
10. How do I clean Back-A-Rest™?
Just wipe it down with a damp cloth and mild soap, then dry it with a towel. No special Maintenance required!
11. Can I travel with Back-A-Rest™?
Yes! Back-A-Rest is lightweight and portable, weighing in at 0.6 lbs (270 grams) making it easy to pack for business trips, vacations, or anytime you need relief on the go.
12. Does Back-A-Rest™ come in different sizes?
Currently, Back-A-Rest is available in a standard thickness designed to fit most users. In the future, we plan to offer multiple sizes to accommodate different body types.
13. What if I don't like it? Can I return it?
"Due to hygiene and safety considerations, we only accept returns if the product is in its original, unopened packaging. Once the Back-A-Rest is used on furniture or bedding, it cannot be returned or resold."
14. Is Back-A-Rest covered by a warranty?
Yes! We stand by the quality of our product. If your Back-A-Rest has a manufacturing defect, please contact us and we'll make it right.
15. Will Back-A-Rest™ lose its shape over time?
No! Not at all. Back-A-Rest is designed to flex under your body weight and may develop a gentle "smile" shape during use. This is completely normal and intentional — it's how the product cradles your lower back and delivers real relief.
16. Is Back-A-Rest™ a medical device?
No. Back-A-Rest is not a medical device and does not claim to diagnose, treat, or cure any medical condition. It is intended for general lower back ache, relief and comfort. If you have serious spinal conditions, consult your doctor before use. Please refer to our medical disclaimer on the product information page.
17. Can I sleep on Back-A-Rest™?
No. Back-A-Rest™ is designed for 5–15 minute stretching and decompression sessions, not for sleeping.
For the best results, lie comfortably on your back, relax, and allow your body weight to do the work. Once your session is complete, simply remove Back-A-Rest™ and continue with your day or enjoy a normal night's sleep.
18. How do I get a deeper active lower-back self-massage?
Back-A-Rest™ can do much more than provide a passive stretch. By performing gentle, controlled body movements, you can create a deeper active lower-back self-massage while targeting different muscles and areas of tension.
Lower Body Movements
- Bend your knees with your feet flat on the bed, then slowly rock your knees from side to side like windshield wipers.
- With your knees bent and your feet together, slowly allow your knees to open and close like butterfly wings.
- Raise one knee and leave the other leg straight and then rock the one knee side to side, then alternate.
- Lift your pelvis slightly, then lower it as though your pressing your buttocks into the bed for a great stretch.
- While lying on your back with legs flat, simply spread your legs as far as they will go.
- Perform gentle pelvic tilts and rocking.
- Bring one knee up at a time and then both knees up together.
Back-A-Rest™ Position Changes
- Many users discover that moving the apex of Back-A-Rest™ just one or two inches lower toward the sacrum (the broad bone at the base of your spine) can dramatically change the fulcrum point, creating a deeper stretch and an entirely different self-massage experience.
- Shift Back-A-Rest slightly left or right of the spine.
- Slide Back-A-Rest slightly higher or lower to target different muscles and vertebrae.
- Pause over tight areas and allow your muscles to stretch and then relax.
Perform each movement slowly and gently. Allow your muscles to relax between movements and never force a stretch. Small, controlled motions are usually more effective than large, fast movements.
Everyone's lower back is different. As you become familiar with Back-A-Rest™, you'll naturally discover movements and positions that work best for your body. Many users find that these gentle active movements provide an even deeper stretch and self-massage than simply lying still.
Don't be afraid to experiment with different movements and positions. There is no single "correct" routine. As your muscles relax, you'll naturally discover which movements provide the greatest relief for your body.
19. Why does Back-A-Rest™ feel more comfortable after a few minutes?
Many people notice that Back-A-Rest™ feels firm at first.
That's completely normal.
As your muscles begin to relax and the flexible polyurethane foam gently conforms to your body, the stretch becomes smoother and more comfortable. Most people experience the best results after relaxing on Back-A-Rest™ for 5–15 minutes.
